Who was your role model as a kid and why?
I can't say that I really look back on my childhood and think of any sole person as being my "role model." I suppose I didn't know it then, but my grandfather probably played that part. Since my parents divorced right after I was born, my older brother and I lived with my mom, who worked a lot and consequently, I was partially raised by my grandparents. My grandfather grew up in Spanish Harlem in NYC and at 18, realized that he needed to get out if he were going to do anything with his life. He joined the Air Force and served for many years - fighting in war and living all over the world with my grandmother and their children. He realized the importance of education and went back to college and got his Bachelors and Masters degrees. He's definitely the strong backbone of our family and an inspiration to all of his grandchildren.
What is the most amazing thing you've experienced in your life?
Being accepted to Teach For America and being able to fight in our nation's current civil war - the war against educational inequity. Although I majored in advertising, when I learned about the achievement gap that exists among low-income students and their high income peers, I have found within me a passion and a drive to do whatever I can to ensure that all students receive the education that they deserve.
Why should you be the first Every Man Jack?
My best friends in life will tell you that one of my best qualities is that I'm genuine. I believe that comes from being a man of substance. I am extremely passionate about the people and the things in my life and everything I do, I do wholeheartedly. I believe you can always find the positive in things and life's too short to spend any of it being unhappy. I love to meet new people. I love to travel and plan to experience as much of the world as possible. I am fortunate enough to have some of the best people in the world as my good friends and family who mean more to me than anything. As passionate as I am about what's inside of me and others, I believe that ought to be balanced by style. I like to think that I'm not concerned about my appearance to the point of Narcissism, but I definitely make sure that I always look good because when you look good, you feel good. I like to rock the five o'clock shadow and EMJ products are what I use to get me that. I definitely enjoy clothes and shopping, which I owe to my mom. (Thanks, mom!) I understand the importance of being a man of depth and substance, and the importance of style and looking your best, which is why I believe I should be the first Every Man Jack.
